WA IPA has released its 2017 ELECTRICITY Reform White Paper.

The goal of the paper is to support the McGowan Government’s public commitment to industry reform and to help secure affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for WA.

The document brings together the collective knowledge of all WA IPA members. These individuals have decades of experience in the Western Australian electricity market, both from within government and from the private sector.

It includes practical reforms for both the short and long-term. Effective reforms will secure affordable, reliable and sustainable energy for WA consumers.

WA IPA hopes to see government and its agencies use this White Paper as a starting point to work collaboratively with industry to implement robust and meaningful electricity reform.

Outcome/Current position

The WA Government's Energy Transformation Taskforce adopted most of the reforms advocated by the WAIPA to modernise the grid and market while keeping the basic concept of the reserve capacity mechanism which provides security and reliability to WA’s power system.

Just as importantly, the reform process incorporated the Association’s strong recommendation that the Taskforce consult industry on both the strategic policy issues as well as the technical details. This has meant widespread acceptance of the reforms and the ability of industry to plan for the changes to accommodate updated market rules.
